7 Aromatherapy Recipes for Women’s Health: Head, Heart & Gut

Women, we certainly are rockstars, aren’t we? We navigate through our daily responsibilities as a caretaker, leader, emotional warrior and peacemaker. If we are so awesome, why do we put ourselves last on our list of things to do? Why do we not take more time to nourish ourselves? Why are we not first on our list?

That changes now. Let’s support each other. Encourage each other. Inspire each other to take care of our physical, mental and emotional needs. After all, everyone depends on us.

Ok, great. You are on board. Now you ask me, “What now? What do I do? How do I do it?” Let’s talk about that. Here are some tidbits to empower you with the “why”. Then, I’ll get into specifics about the “how”.

Benefits of Phyto-Aromatherapy for Women’s health

Aromatherapy…human and animal’s best friend. The power of scent. It reminds us of good times. It reminds us of challenges we once faced and conquered. It helps us through personal attacks and in setting boundaries. It connects our head, heart and gut all together so we can think more clearly, make more effective decisions, and connect on a deeper level with ourselves, so that we can wake up each day, and continue on. Research shows that you remember more when scent is involved.

Top Women’s Health Needs

As women, we certainly do have a lot to maintain. Our sanity, our body and our mind. When we experience emotional distress, and we bury it or hide it, it doesn’t just disappear. It soaks deep within our cells and tissues and buries itself within an organ structure. For example, worry is harbored in the intestines. Anger is held in the liver. Grief we hold in the lungs. Fear we hold in the kidneys. Next time you have an issue with one of these areas, ask yourself, “am I also experiencing this emotion? If you are having kidney or urinary issues, are you also experiencing fear? If you are coughing or having respiratory distress, are you also going through grief over the loss of a person, job, friendship, career or something else?

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: If you are a worrier, like me, connect with why you worry so much. Is it fear of losing control? Fear of not being a part of a community? And does the success of worry, hold you back from accomplishing a goal or a task? Does it heighten any anxiety or depression? If so, really connect to why this burdens you so much. Journal about it. Revisit your Personal Milemarker Map. Get to the root cause. Usually, it traces back to a childhood event. Also, look at your diet. Often times we are eating the wrong foods, drinking the wrong beverages, not getting enough water, and having lack of sleep period these are some basic areas that you can start with improving to start nourishing your guide rather than hurting it. Issues can be anything from gas, bloating, IBS, IBD, diverticulitis, Crohn’s and Celiac’s disease.
  • Immune Distress: Do you get sick often? Are you the one that always catches the cold or the flu? Are you constantly tired and fatigued? Do you have congestion or runny nose often? These are all signs that the immune system is not happy. This is connected to gastrointestinal health. If your gut cannot absorb nutrients and eliminate waste optimally, then it will start affecting the immune system.
  • Hormones Imbalances: If you don’t know if you have a hormone imbalance, ask those around you. If you have mood swings, irritability, frustration, agitation, headaches monthly, or irregular menses, this can be a sign that the hormones are not balanced. There are certain herbs such as Maca, and essential oils such as geranium that can be beneficial and helping bring these into balance.
  • Headaches: Do you experience chronic headaches? Is there a pattern to them? Do they happen at a certain time of day? Month? Situation? This is a sign that the liver is overtaxed and tissues are dehydrated. Drinking extra water and taking some minerals can be very beneficial.
  • Stress, Anxiety & Depression: Stress, anxiety and depression are a silent ailment. Often times as women, we bury it or push it aside so we can focus on other people. That doesn’t make it go away. It makes you feel more alone, like no one understands and you feel defeated at the end of the day. Guess what? You are not alone. This is more common than you know. It’s just not talked about as much. If you have a friend who might not be themselves, they seem down or sad, ask them how they’re doing. Ask them how they’re really doing. When we’re up and positive, we need to share that with others to help them find their way through a tough situation. If you were the one that is down and depressed, ask for help. Ask a friend to have lunch or tea so you can talk about your feelings. My saying is “better out than in”. Share it.
  • Breast, ovarian & uterine cancer: Cancer is something that will affect all of us or someone we know at some point during our life. In today’s society, almost everyone knows someone who is battling or thriving from a cancer situation. It’s not easy for the person or their loved ones. It can be very scary period it provokes a lot of emotions. It creates a sense of urgency that you must act now and handle every situation now. Having a strong support team will be very critical in helping you fight this disease. Make sure you reach out to someone or a support group so we can lift you up. Also, surround yourself with positive aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy Remedies

Choosing the right essential oils to bring your emotions, thoughts and physical issues back in balance can prove beneficial. When you match up the right remedy with an issue, you get results. Here are some of my favorite women supporting essential oils. You can add to a diffuser or to a DIY aromatherapy blend – spray, massage oil, bath salt, perfume, roll-on, deodorant or cream.

  • Chamomile: nurture, caretake, gut health
  • Cinnamon: hug in a bottle
  • Clary sage: make me laugh, headaches
  • Eucalyptus: feel overwhelmed
  • Frankincense: respiratory, allergies
  • Geranium: balancing, headaches
  • Lavender: harmony, peace, relaxed
  • Lemongrass: feel alive and motivated
  • Orange: adrenal support
  • Patchouli: constipation, let go of past hurts
  • Peppermint: get out of comfort zone
  • Rose: feeds and nourishes the heart & soul, all women’s issues

  • Tea Tree: immune, respiratory
  • Ylang Ylang: promotes self-love

Herbal Remedies

When you choose an herbal remedy, there are several factors you should consider.

  • Safety: Did you read about the benefits and any possible contraindications?  For example, someone taking blood thinners, should use caution when taking herbal supplements that have a blood thinning action such as cinnamon, Vitamin E and Gingko biloba.
  • Quality: Is it a good quality supplement, free of any contaminants? Do the ingredients meet what the label claims?
  • Support: Does the herb support your mind and body to bring it balance in the right direction?  Meaning, if you are having hot flashes, is the herb cooling, like peppermint?  If it is heating, like oregano, it can exasperate and enhance the heat, which might make them worse.

There are some specific herbal remedies that every woman should have in her holistic medicine cabinet.

  • Adaptogens: An absolute must! Helps you adapt to stressful situations with rationale and focus, without being overly emotional
  • Antioxidants: help us stay strong through the aging process
  • Enzymes: helps breaks down nutrients to feed your body and cells
  • Immune supporting blend of medicinal mushroom, elderberry, olive leaf and/or aquasol silver
    • Medicinal mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Maitake and Shitake Mushrooms help strengthen neurological functions and brain health (I get so much brain power when I take just 1 capsule daily)
  • Minerals: needed for healthy kidney and brain function, also enhances hydration
  • Protein: feeds cells, tissues, organs and brain; gives energy and balances blood sugar (needed to combat anxiety)
  • Spirulina: helps when you feel anemic, tired and lack of nutrients
  • Wild Yam: can balance estrogen dominance
  • Yarrow: this helps when you have excessive bleeding, and feel like you gave away too much of your personal energy
