The Power of Rosemary Essential Oil
You can’t help but be transported to an herb field, with wide open spaces allowing you to breathe better and think clearer. It has a distinct scent that almost everyone can recognize. When you see it, you feel compelled to rub the leaves immediately and sniff your fingers. It is a staple in the kitchen, in most herb gardens, and serves as an herbal Christmas tree during the holidays.
The Rosemary Brain
Rosemary has been labeled as one of the main brain herbs. I love rosemary not only to enhance my physical circulation (vein health), but to get me out of an emotionally sluggish rut or mental shortfall. Rosemary is known to be one of the best essential oils and botanicals to enhance brain functions, memory, focus, concentration and cognitive faculties. Many studies have been conducted on the benefits rosemary lends for many different health concerns and ailments. One study showed a significant enhancement in memory performance (source), as well as speed and accuracy (source). Rosemary stimulates beta wave activity, autonomic nervous system activity and mood states (source).
The Rosemary Heart – Love & Death
Historically, rosemary has been a symbol of love, death and remembrance. It was used, along with mints and bay laurel to commemorate special occasions and victories in battle. During the Middle Ages, it was used at wedding ceremonies as a love charm. As an honoring her, it was planted by graves at funerals as a sign of remembrance, to honor the memories of one’s life, celebrate their joys and embrace the transition on of their soul.
Being a heart oil, it strengthens and stimulates heart functions, as well as the emotions connected to the heart – love, joy, rejection, and broken-heartedness. It is, however, contraindicated with those who have high blood pressure, as it can be too heat stimulating. It would be an ideal remedy for someone with low blood pressure, or who need some energy to get moving and get motivated.
Rosemary has a personality of its own. It like to be with other oils, as long as it is not closed in. Hence, someone who is claustrophobic or feels smothered by others (or circumstances), would benefit from smelling rosemary. Anyone experiencing feelings of betrayal, being lost or need help finding their way, should include some rosemary in their custom blend – whether a bath salt, body spray, hand lotion or roll-on.
The Rosemary Gut
Digestion is a huge issue for many people. Gas, bloating, indigestion, reflux, food sits heavy in the stomach and either constipation and/or diarrhea. A couple things are going on here. Stress can play a factor in inhibiting your gut from absorbing nutrients, which are needed to feed the processes that allow you to “take out the trash”. Dehydration, poor diet, and inadequate sleep are also factors that play into an unhappy gut. So, what can rosemary do for your stomach? It stimulates circulation, to get things moving – nutrients in and toxins out. It helps when you feel sluggish. Not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. It helps increase oxygen within the blood to help cells move, get transported to the right areas and aid in decongesting those intestinal roadways. Rosemary also enhances the immune system, which resides in the gut.
