Helichrysum for Emotional Healing and Scars
Helichyrsum is a very special plant and essential oil. Historically, in ancient times, it was used as an anti-aging skin nourisher. The common name, as it is more popularly referred to is immortelle, as the flowers do not wither. Now you can see why it has an association with anti-aging remedies, both for inside and out, and outside in. Inhalation of helichrysum can spark your cells and infuse them with energy and motivation. Just like the saying goes, “young at heart”. Helichrysum is “young at cells”. Think cellular level healing and young at heart.
This essential oil and hydrosol is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to emotional healing. The power it posses to combat deep emotional scars, battle wounds, emotional exhaustion, traumas, PTSD and adversity. When you smell the scent it instantly inspires courage, provokes willpower and strengths your core to persevere and conquer anger, fear and resentment. It is helpful for those combating addictions. How can this essential not be in your emotional well-being kit?
Helichrysum, the Healer
Not only does it help with emotional scars, but physical scars as well. If you have any pigmentation, discoloration, bruising, scratches, radiation burn or other surface skin issues, add a couple drops to a carrier oil or shea butter and use daily. You do not want to use on or in an open wound. Helichrysum has some fast healing power, so you don’t want to heal the edges of a skin wound, as it can leave an opening, or pocket in the center, where infection can set in.
Emotionally, you can diffuse a couple drops during the day, or when you are journaling about your emotional issues, to help you connect on a deeper level. This really reaches in to the depths of that trauma so you can own it, then release it. It is a gentle soul oil, however a powerful one. if you diffuse too much, it can make you feel uncomfortable as it is trying to touch those deep emotional wounds and get rid of them. If it shifts your energy and emotions too quickly, back down to diffusing or using just one drop daily.
Helichrysum is a notorious “liver oil”. Meaning, it helps release emotions burdening the liver. The liver is the organ of heat and harbors the emotion of anger. Have you ever heard that saying, “boy, he is a liverish today”? That means he is not happy, mean and angry. Think about it, the liver facilitates proper detoxification of toxins. If those toxins cannot get out, they become angry. Having over 500 different functions, the liver not only helps the body rid itself of toxins, it produces and metabolizes hormones, microbiome balance and assists in circulation processes, among hundreds of other functions.
Emotional Healing Applications
- Diffusion: diffuse 1-2 drops of Helichrysum with a citrus and/or floral scent while you are journaling, taking a healing aromatic bath, meditating, doing yoga or getting ready for bed. Helps you not go to bed mad.
- Lotion or Massage Oil: Mix helichrysum with other essential oils of your choice in an unscented lotion base, shea butter, carrier oil and/or aloe vera gel. Apply to body starting at the ankles, working your way up, using small circular motions towards your heart. This will enhance circulation. If there is scarring, add in carrot seed and/or frankincense essential oils.
- Roll-on: Add helichrysum and 2-3 other essential oils to a carrier oil. Use as a perfume, headache relief (add peppermint), PMS buster (add geranium), mood balancer (add bergamot), or as an “I love me” daily pulse point blend.
