Scents for Dad’s: Common Emotions Father’s Experience and Essential Oil Blends to Help Them Feel Their Best

Father’s Day is a special time to celebrate and honor all the dads and father-figures in our lives. While we often focus on giving gifts and expressing gratitude, it’s also essential to acknowledge the deeper emotions that fathers may experience and offer support to help them navigate their feelings.

Most dads have a harder time expressing their feelings, and bury them deep to hide their insecurities, fears, and pain. Aromatherapy, with its powerful scents and therapeutic properties, is a valuable tool in promoting emotional wellbeing for dads.

While it’s commonly understood that both men and women encounter a wide range of emotions in their daily lives, what’s often overlooked is how their olfactory preferences differ in addressing these emotions. Research has shown that certain essential oils can have different effects on individuals based on their gender, highlighting the importance of tailoring aromatherapy practices to specific needs and preferences.

Additionally, while men and women may experience similar emotions such as stress, anxiety, happiness, and sadness, societal and cultural factors can influence how they express and perceive these emotions.

In honor of Father’s day (and father figures day), here are some most common emotions I have seen dads experience based on my 22 years of creating blends, as well as essential oil blends that are best suited to help them feel their best:

1. Stress and Overwhelm:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Lavender, Bergamot, and Cedarwood in equal parts for a diffuser blend, roll-on, cologne, or body spray in a carrier. Many dads juggle multiple responsibilities and can feel overwhelmed. Lavender, Bergamot, and Cedarwood essential oils can help promote relaxation, reduce stress levels, and keep them grounded, allowing dads to unwind and feel in control.

2. Fatigue and Exhaustion:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Lemon in equal parts in a roll-on with a carrier oil, diffuser blend, or nasal atomizer. Long work hours, business meetings, and late nights can leave dads feeling drained and tired. Often times their thyroid and metabolism are a bit sluggish causing fatigue. A blend of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Lemon essential oils can provide a refreshing boost of energy and mental clarity, helping dads feel revitalized and invigorated. Side note, peppermint helps people take in new ideas. So, if you want dad to be open to an idea you want to pitch him, peppermint is your oil.

3. Anxiety and Tension:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Two parts Frankincense and Chamomile to one part Clary Sage in a roll-on with a carrier oil. Anxiety and tension affect dads just as much as anyone else. Frankincense provides a sense of grounding and spirituality, while Clary Sage releases tension and stress. Chamomile essential oil is a natural caretaker. All of these have calming properties that can soothe the mind and promote a sense of inner peace and tranquility.

Bonus tip, adding in 1-2 drops of cinnamon leaf essential oil can help, especially if dad has blood sugar issues. This is a sign that he’s losing joy in his life.

4. Mood Swings and Irritability:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Ylang Ylang, Sweet Orange, and Sandalwood in equal parts in a nasal atomizer, roll-on or body spray in a carrier. Dads may experience mood swings and irritability due to various factors. When I had my herb shop and day spa, I had several dads come to see me complaining of a hormone imbalance, irritability, and moodiness. A blend of Ylang Ylang, Sweet Orange, and Sandalwood essential oils can help uplift and stabilize their mood, while promoting emotional balance that allows dads to approach challenges with a positive outlook and less irritability.

5. Lack of Focus and Concentration:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Rosemary, Sweet Basil, and Peppermint in equal parts in a nasal diffuser or diffuser blend. For dads struggling to concentrate and stay focused, a blend of Rosemary, Sweet Basil, and Peppermint essential oils can enhance mental clarity and cognitive function, enabling them to tackle tasks with precision, accuracy, and efficiency.

6. Self-Worth and Confidence:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Patchouli, Juniper and Vetiver in equal parts in a nasal atomizer or roll-on in a carrier. Although they try not to show it, dads sometimes struggle with feelings of self-worth and confidence. Patchouli, Cedarwood, and Vetiver essential oils can help instill a sense of inner strength and assurance, empowering dads to embrace their value and capabilities. Helping them feel their worth can empower their mindset and inspire confidence.

7. Gratitude and Appreciation:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Geranium, Sweet Orange, and Pink Grapefruit in a diffuser blend or room spray in a carrier. Expressing gratitude and appreciation is essential for emotional well-being. It helps you to focus on the positive and productive side of a situation, and not dwell on the negative causing distress and inner turmoil. Geranium, Sweet Orange, and Pink Grapefruit essential oils can evoke feelings of joy and thankfulness, fostering deeper connections and meaningful relationships.

8. Grief and Loss:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Two parts Bergamot, Frankincense, and Ravintsara to one part Rose in a nasal atomizer or roll-on in a carrier. Dad’s experience grief and loss in various forms. The emotion of grief we hold in the lungs, therefore supporting the respiratory system in important. Bergamot, Frankincense, Ravintsara, and Rose essential oils can provide comfort and support during difficult times, helping dads navigate their emotions with strength and resilience.

9. Motivation and Drive:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Ginger, Black Pepper, and Lemon in equal parts in a nasal atomizer, or roll-on or body spray in a carrier.  Maintaining motivation and drive is essential for pursuing goals and dreams. Ginger, Black Pepper, and Lemon essential oils encourage your “mover and shaker” inner fire, to invigorate the spirit and ignite passion, fueling dads’ determination to succeed.

10. Joy and Contentment:

🌿 Essential Oil Blend: Two parts Lime and Cinnamon to one part Jasmine in a nasal atomizer, diffuser blend, or roll-on in a carrier. Finding moments of joy and contentment is key to overall happiness. It helps keep a smile on your face, and in your heart. Lime, Cinnamon, and Jasmine essential oils uplift the mood and evoke feelings of warmth and fulfillment, allowing dads to savor life’s simple pleasures. It also calms anxiety, often triggered by lack of joy.

By incorporating these essential oil blends into their daily routines, dads can support their emotional well-being and experience greater balance and harmony in their lives. They can use one, two, or three blends as they need throughout the day to maintain a positive outlook, feel confident, worthy, valued, and appreciated.

Research studies and insights provide valuable evidence supporting the notion that men and women may have different preferences for essential oil scents and that gender-specific aromatherapy interventions may offer unique benefits for emotional well-being. Thus, having personalized bespoke blends are highly recommended.

Order a personalized custom blend for dad, yourself, and anyone else who needs mental and emotional support in their life.
