Integrating aromatherapy into a daily regimen has been proven to be very effective in managing mood, behavior, responses and reactions. When you match up the right remedies to tackle an issue, you will always see results. If you are not seeing or feeling results, then you need to look deeper at the core issue and determine the true culprits of the imbalance.
For example, certain foods can cause chemical reactions, metabolism changes and neurotransmitter disruptions within the body. But this is not a cookie cutter effect for everyone. I could eat sweet potatoes and be completely fine and satisfied with it, however someone else may have an adverse reaction such as reflux, excess mucus production causing a tickle in throat, gas, bloating or even stomach discomfort. Mentally and emotionally, it can either enhance focus and concentration or reduce it. It can make you happy, creative and productive, or make you feel sluggish, confused and unmotivated. Foods, are just one piece to the puzzle of managing daily health – physically, mentally and emotionally.
Aromatherapy for Mental Health
With issues such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), you have to look at everything that makes you up everyday. Habits such as food, hydration, stresses, environmental atmosphere, sleep, movement and exercise and elimination. If any one of these pieces are imbalanced, deficient or negatively affected, it will throw off the entire body system including mental and behavioral faculties such as your responses and reactions.
Let’s talk more about an importance puzzle piece that can bring you a remedy and solution…Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy, as I define it in my Holistic Aromatherapy Comprehensive Guide is the use of essentials to influence, shift, change, inspire, empower and alter mood, emotions, physical functions, behaviors, actions, responses, reactions and our environment. You match up certain essential oils either individually, or in a combination to help you achieve a balanced state of all of these processes simultaneously. You see, the limbic system is incredibly powerful and when provoked via a smell, it engages all of the limbic faculties to help you assess and take action. When there is an imbalance, you will match up an essential oil possessing the opposite effects to bring it more in balance. An example would be anger, hysteria and spastic over-reactions. You would choose essential oils that possess qualities of cooling, calming, antispasmodic and relaxing. If you chose essential oils that deliver heating effects, you would elevate the heat already present, thus, not achieving the results you needed.
Essential Oils for ADHD
Let’s define some qualities associated with ADHD so we can then determine the best essential oil choices to provide the desired results you are seeking.
ADHD can be:
- Hyperactive, over-excited, hysteria, spastic
- To balance this, you will need calming and relaxants.
- Cognitive imbalances – short attention span, short-temper, not complete tasks, inattentive, easily distracted, impulsive or reactionary, trouble communicating
- To balance this, you will need cephalic and circulatory remedies
- Restless, nervous, anxious
- To balance this, you will need antispasmoic, calming and blood sugar supporters (blood sugar imbalances have been linked to anxiety)
- Adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues, gastrointestinal issues
- To balance this, you will need nutritive, nourishers and restoring remedies
Essential oils that support, enhance and balance these issues are:
